my laptop is 4yrs old and serves me just dandy. i've gotten lucky...no crashes, no viruses, no retarded problems that come from a retarded user.
man, 1200$ would build a pretty damn nice machine. plus, in my opinion, you'll learn a lot in the process. assuming you delve into the building of it, and research what you're putting in. i know i learned a lot just spec'ing out the machine i was going to build. my roomie just spent 1200 on his monitor. no wait, i think the price was dropped. it's a 21" Dell LCD. i think his comp cost 1400$, and can out perform anything i've seen. pretty aluminum case, too, with an acrylic outer shell.
i just rode with Marshall Hance. i'm happy.

Hmm... honestly, the biggest problem is that my dad is funding this, so the final say comes from him... hence the trade-in question. I'd rather donate it, but it's his decision since he's paying. I've got Moulin Rouge on here, but I guess that's not enough to make it happy. Thanks for the advice from you guys, though.
On another note, anyone out there looking to live in west campus next year and in need of a roommate? Mine just called and backed out, saying she decided to live at home with her parents... which would be fine, but we were about to sign our lease, and at this point, everyone else I know is already committed to where they're living next year. No, I'm not pissed...

JD, I thought about building my own (God knows I've got enough geeky friends who could do that for me and help me get the parts), but I've got no idea how to fix it if something goes wrong, and the Dell support guys and I have had several chats over the years when my computer has decided to do something stupid. I also thought of cleaning out the one I've got now, but my friend looked at it the other day, and laughed at the size of the case, so I'm not sure that's such a great option. Plus, I'd like to have a 2nd bay for a DVD drive... at the moment, I've got the CD-RW, an A drive, and that's pretty much all the space I've got.
And I think it hates me, anyway--a little over two years ago (when it was less than six months old) it decided to stop displaying ANYTHING on the monitor. That was fun. Then, last year, it decided to get rid of Windows. Again, lots of fun. I take care of it--I dust it, I try to clean out old mp3's every month or so, I don't write too many papers on it--so who knows? Maybe it's bitter because there's no porn on it.

Hey Josh--you work at Dell--mind giving me a bit of your humble opinion on a computer? I've got a Dimension L667r at the moment, and I've had it for a little over 2 1/2 years... basically, I hate this thing. My dad ordered it, and didn't bother to ask me what I wanted out of the computer, so here I am, strapped with a $1,000 investment that can't even handle multiple IE windows being open at once. I've gotten through to him that I need a new one, and he's agreed to fund it (mostly because if he'd bothered to listen to me 3 years ago, we wouldn't have this problem--and it was my dime that bought 75% of this piece of crap machine).
So, since I generally use the computer for internet crap, downloading music and movies, word processing--the basic college functions, though no internet porn--what do you reccommend? And I'm on a budget--I'd like to stay under $1200 with tax.
