Ashley - the difference seems to be, the first thing I notice are the things we do well, and the first thing you mention are the things we did wrong (or a backhanded compliment, like "at least we were only playing Tulane"). I notice all the other things that you're talking about, too, and I'm just as concerned about them. But no football team plays perfectly every game. The only things that I really bitch about are problems which have manifested themselves over long periods of time. The OL, for one. We've had trouble with our run-blocking schemes for THREE YEARS now. It amazes me that Tim Nunez still has a job, but I'm impressed with the changes made after UNT. Our special teams play is another, but it's beginning to look like this last offeseason addressed many of those concerns, except for deep snapper (which will burn us at some point this year). What I don't bitch about are turnovers, especially of the type we've given up in the last two games. I don't bitch about "effort" or "the offense being asleep" because fuck, we WON. It's a GOOD THING. Good teams win when they aren't clicking like that. The result of the game is a POSITIVE, not a "but .... ".
And I remember all to well what happened in 1997. I remember 4-7. I remember losing to NCSt, and KSt, and (shudder) UCLA. And I know that those things won't happen again anytime soon, and it gladdens me. Go ahead and talk like the glass is half empty. It ain't - in fact, it ain't half anything, it's full, period. We may not be the best team in the nation. Hell, we may not be as good as OU (we'll find otu soon enough). But fuck, we're so much better off than we were even TWO YEARS ago, and next year looks to be every bit as promising as this year. So smile and enjoy it.

Josh, the reason people hate Texas fans is because we act like we own the world when we beat teams like Tulane 49-0, then we choke against good teams and decide to blame it on our QB.
I don't have unrealistic expectations. Like I said, I'm not disappointed in the score. But people who didn't see the game aren't getting the whole picture. There are several teams who could have beaten Tulane that way. Am I glad we kicked their asses? Yes. Am I satisfied with the way we did it? Hell no. And there is a difference. We didn't play a bad game, and I saw a lot of promise from the freshmen, but for the most part, our offense played like they didn't give a shit. They have the talent to be even better than Miami, yet I didn't see anything from Saturday's game that tells me our offense is ready for some of the defenses they're going to face in conference play. Simms didn't break 200 yards passing, Benson didn't break 100 yards rushing. Against freaking Tulane. That doesn't bode well for us against teams that have real defenses.
Yeah, we're #2 in both polls now and maybe that gives you a false sense of security, but I happen to see a few weaknesses. I hardly think I'm the one who's being unrealistic.

Damn, I wish I could run the "14 points be default" offense. How does that work, exactly? Do they pay off the scoreboard operator, and start each game ahead 14-0?
LaTech fucking sucks. You guys scored 31 against LaLa, too.
Ashley, there's a difference between discussing things that worry you, and bitching because your football team didn't win 145-3 with 600 yards of total offense. Yes, we've had 5 turnovers in 2 games, but if you look at them, only two of them even really mattered. Simms first interception was a ball that should have been caught, and was then intercepted because the defender fell on Tony Jeffery instead of the ground. Two of the other fumbles were by true freshmen in garbage time, which is exactly the reason the freshmen were playing, and exactly when you'd rather have them fumble, because you can bitch them out about it, they learn from it, and it has NO impact on the game. The pick and the center exchange fumble against Tulane were pretty brutal, but every team has turnovers, even Miami.
Unrealistic expectations are part of the reason why people hate Texas fans, and why Texas fans are bitter people in general. I'm not saying that you need to ignore the negative and pump sunshine all day, but ENJOY the fact that we can win 49-0 and play every person on our roster that wasn't hurt, even on a day when perhaps we didn't have our A game. It's been a LOOOOOOONG time since we could say those things in Austin.
And just so we're clear, Miami struggled with Temple and BC. Bring those fuckers on - give me a straight up game, and we'll win 50% or more of them.

I must say, that despite my disdain for everything maroon, this site can be genuinely amusing at times. No No, im serious. Take for example, when former ag says "A&M is back" and "we're unstoppable", genuinely hilarious. Why? because i began laughing profusely when i first read that, and now (5 minutes later) i am still chuckling. I also see aggies have mastered the art of sarcasm, as is obvious when statements such as "the aggies would score 70 points a game" are posted. LOL, greatly amusing, hahaha, thankyou.
YOUR OFFENSE COULDN'T SCORE 70 POINTS IF THEY WERE PLAYING DISABLED GIRLSCOUTS, THREE WEEKS IN A ROW, WITH 20 PLAYERS ON THE FIELD.
YOUR "FEARLESS LEADER" MARCUS FAGGIS(or whoever the hell your QB is this week) SHOULD LOOK INTO GETTING A GOLF SCHOLARSHIP, HE WON'T HAVE TO THROW ANYTHING, AND HE CAN TAKE A BREAK WHENEVER HE GETS HIS FEELINGS HURT. LIKE NEXT WEEK, WHEN TECH COMES TO TOWN. I HEAR COACH LEACH IS REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO PLAYING YALL, SEEMS LIKE OUR 4TH STRING D WANTS MORE PLAY TIME. TOYING AROUND WITH YALLS RB'S WILL BE GOOD FOR THEM. MAYBE IF THEY PLAY GOOD ENOUGH, THEY CAN MOVE UP AND PRACTICE WITH A DIVISION II LEVEL OFFENSE NEXT TIME. PEACE

I know what happened. I was there. And I wasn't terribly impressed. We were mediocre at best. I'm proud of our D because it's hard as hell to hold any team scoreless, but what concerns me is that we aren't playing as well as we could be and should be playing.
Like I said, the defense did a nice job, but the fact that we had so much trouble getting something going against Tulane is not very comforting. It's not about the score, it's about the way we played overall. LCC beat New Mexico 49-0 also and you don't hear anyone tooting their horn. Well, not anyone who counts anyway.
Turnovers are another issue. We had no turnovers in either of the first two games, and we've had 5 in the last two. To me, it looks like we're falling into the same situation we fell into last year. Beat up on a bunch of crappy teams in OOC because we can, and then swagger into Dallas thinking we're invincible. Luckily this team appears to be a little more focused than last year's team, but they were looking awfully relaxed yesterday, if you ask me, and we've got a tough slate of games coming up in October (OSU, OU, KSU, ISU). Now is not the time to get lazy.
Talentwise, we can run with Miami. I have no doubt about that. But Miami would have kicked our ass yesterday, maybe even with their second string. I'm hoping that we're just holding back until we play a real team.
