Well, maybe at OU the professors are teaching because they couldn't "hack it" in the real world, but in my experiences at A&M, the profs teaching science and engineering, for example, are a hell of a lot more intelligent, productive, and motivated then the lazy fat-ass engineer working for XYZ Manufacturing who stuffs his face with donuts, takes 2 hour lunches, bitches about his job, and leaves 20 minutes early every day. The professors are the ones making the breakthroughs and getting the patents, and most (if not all) are highly sought in the world outside academia. Do you think a professor with a Ph.D. at a large university is there because he's not smart enough to make it in industry? More than likely, he's willing to take a paycut to actually have an interesting occupation in the field with independence and the opportunity to teach.
Geez, they must let anyone into OU nowadays.
