Goddess, they had the planes on radar, especailly after the first crash and they grounded everyone else. The FAA saw the second plane veer off course and knew it was headed for NYC for 30 minutes, but they couldn't do anything to stop it. As for DC, it is restricted airspace, but it isn't a no-fly zone. The plane was already flying on a route close by so there was little warning of the crash to come. Certainly not enough time to get fighters up in the air. I don't think they could shoot it down anyway. Too many civilians on board.

It's not our job to be involved in the middle east .... however, if they fuck with us, let's nuke them till they glow. We have the power, let's fucking use it.

I believe somehow Afghanistan is involved with this. The explosions there seem to be a dead giveway that something isn't right. It could possibly be rebels rising against Bin Laden's faction or Bin Laden trying to cover his bases with a distraction. There are still too many possibilities. Saddam could be in bed with Laden and they could have worked together or maybe Palestine worked with Iraq for the attacks and tried to cover it up with explosions in Afghanistan. It could be local (which I seriously doubt), or it could be a country we wouldn't even consider. Just too many possibilities. We should all just sit back and listen and see what unfolds. I'm going to leave this up to the experts. That is the their job. The world is too big for a simple college student to have an opinion on a catastrophe this large.

The hijackers would have to have at least a basic knowledge of flying a large craft to hit those buildings as precisely as they did. They weren't exactly precise, but the maneuverability of large jetliners is limited. Also, the planning would have to be immense to simultaneously hijack four planes and use them as weapons against us. Did you notice how the second plane didn't crash into the second tower for at least 15 minutes? Someone wanted the media there and that's what they got. Your three biggest possibilities for something like this are Laden, Hussein, and the Palestinians. This is totally messed up.

I've never been there, but I hear Isreal's airport is the pinnacle of security. Might explain why they've never even had a hijack attempt on El Al. Italy is pretty paranoid too. There were dogs and military guys everywhere in Milan. We, on the other hand, have disgruntled employees who probably barely got their GED manning crappy black and white x-ray machines. I suspect that'll change soon though.

Think about the planning and coordination to hijack 4 airplanes (in a country with arguably the highest level of security at its airports) and crash 2 of them into the World Trade Towers only minutes apart? And then crash one into the Pentagon. And while the Palestinians may not have done this, they should still be on the hit list for claiming "victory" and rejoicing. This took some serious planning and some serious money.

And now someone is going to get a serious bullet between their fucking Middle Eastern eyes. I say bring on a new Executive Order and start recruiting some snipers.

Don't get me wrong, my personal choice is Bin Laden and associated groups, for a variety of reasons. I just don't want to artificially shield myself from other possibilities because of limits Americans impose on this sort of thing. These people are not rational, and they are not distracted. Determination can be used to overcome a multitude of things that normal people would just give up on.

Americans need to suspend belief about what can and can't be done. Religious fanatics are not rational. They are willing to take their own lives for the sake of their missions, and for the sake of their god. I trust my miltaristic, conservative federal government now more than ever. The most important ramification of this event is that the myth of American invincibility is shattered. It takes a lot of special training to fly a 757/767. It also took an assload of coordination. Hijack 4 transcontinental planes at the same time? You can't just plan that in someone's back yard. You need a government sheild like bin Laden has. The PLO is too busy with the Isralies to do this. Plus they have to gain worldwide acceptance in order to create their desired Palestinian State. bin Laden has no such qualms to worry about. My only point is, don't blame the Palestinians. Kumquat, how much money would something like this really take? All you need is a pilot and a knife and a couple of comrades, and you're there. Shoot, I've carried a knife onto a plane, and this knife is very, very capable of killing someone. And as for piloting the plane, if you get the pilot to turn the fucking thing around towards JFK before you kill him, all you gotta do is hit the largest building in the world once you hit New York. All this type of operation takes is planning, and with airline schedules, presidential schedules, work schedules, et. all widely available on the internet and through covert ops, the only other thing you'd need is time.

I'm all for fucking up bin Laden too, but he isn't Palestinian. He's Saudi Arabian. He is sheilded by the hard line islamic government, called Taliban, in Afghanistan. Not sure if the surrealism of this event will pass anytime soon. I mean I was just in New York a couple years ago and did the whole tourist thing. Stood on the top of the world trade center and being in architecture marveled at the mastery at which the building stood there. Now it's not in the skyline anymore.
