President Gates Apologizes To Texas Tech, Tech President Schmidly Publicly Accepts
Editor's Note: Following is the text of the letter of apology Texas A&M President Robert M. Gates sent Thursday (Aug. 15) to Texas Tech President David J. Schmidly concerning the accidental inclusion in the Texas A&M football media guide of disparaging remarks about Texas Tech and Lubbock. The text of Dr. Gates' letter is followed by a copy of a news release issued today (Aug. 16) by Tech President David Schmidly in response.
"Further to our telephone conversation this morning, I want to express my personal regret over the inclusion of disparaging remarks about Texas Tech University and Lubbock in Texas A&M's football media guide. It was a lamentable mistake, for which a public apology already has been made. I have directed that the guide be recalled and the offensive comments removed before it is reissued.
"While I am new in this position, it is obvious that our two universities, and all Texas public universities, have a wide array of issues and challenges that will require our cooperation and collaboration. I look forward to meeting with you, perhaps initially in Lubbock, to discuss opportunities for working together.
"With the opportunities and challenges we face, it is important to contain whatever rivalry exists to athletic competition in the best tradition of good sportsmanship and the highest standards of mutual respect and courtesy. I assure you that certainly will be my message here."
LUBBOCK - Texas Tech University President David J. Schmidly, Ph.D., Thursday received a letter of apology from Texas A&M President Robert M. Gates regarding the accidental inclusion of critical remarks about Texas Tech and Lubbock in the Aggie football media guide.
"We are pleased to have received this notice that the Texas A&M Football Media Guides will be reprinted. We accept President Gates' gracious apology, and we look forward to continuing our healthy rivalry with a renewed spirit of good sportsmanship," Schmidly said.
"Texas Tech University and Texas A&M University will continue our tradition of competition on the playing field and cooperation on the important matters of education and economic growth in our state," said Schmidly
